Solar eclipse Sunday visible from Oregon

Something strange is about to happen to the shadows beneath your feet.

On Sunday, May 20, the Moon will pass in front of the sun, transforming sunbeams across the Pacific side of Earth into fat crescents and thin rings of light.

It's an annular solar eclipse, in which the Moon will cover as much as 94 percent of the sun. Hundreds of millions of people will be able to witness the event. The eclipse zone stretches from southeast Asia across the Pacific Ocean to western parts of North America.

In the United States, the eclipse begins around 5:30 p.m. PDT. For the next two hours, a Moon-shaped portion of the sun will go into hiding. Greatest coverage occurs around 6:30 p.m. PDT. The partial eclipse ends just before 7:30 p.m. >>> Animated Map | Share Your Photos

Because some of the sun is always exposed during the eclipse, ambient daylight won't seem much different than usual.

Police investigate rash of car break-ins

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Almost 100 cars have been broken into within the last month in Springfield.

Springfield Police said the thieves are targeting cars parked outside of homes and businesses in all parts of the city.

No arrests have been made and authorities are asking for the public's help in finding who is responsible.

"That's an extraordinary amount of break-ins, usually we don't get anything like that in town," said Sgt. David Lewis with Springfield Police.

Authorities said thieves are using different methods which include busting windows, using shaved keys, or simply getting in through unlocked doors.

Police believe one group is behind all the break-ins

"There's one indication that they're on bicycles or in the vehicle so they're out of the area before we get there," Sgt. Lewis said.

Springfield resident Shawna Haynes' car was broken into almost a month ago in the driveway of her parents' T Street home.

"I just kind of walked and I felt crunching and I looked down and saw glass everywhere," Haynes said. "Then I looked up and realized we're not going to breakfast."

100 car break-ins in 30 days in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Thieves are breaking into more than 3 cars per day on average as a property crime spree continues, police said.

No arrests have been made to date.

Victims have reported nearly 100 thefts from cars in the City of Springfield in the last 30 days, according to Sgt. David Lewis.

In addition to stolen property, the crooks have broken windows to access the cars.

Most of the crimes have happened late at night or early in the morning, Lewis said.

The Springfield Police Department is urging everyone to take precautions to secure their vehicles and to report suspicious activities if they are observed.

Anyone with information about these crimes is urged to contact the Springfield Police non- emergency line at (541) 726-3714.

'Man up to what you did and take responsibility'

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Violence erupted last year at a mobile home on Harbor Drive, where a man was shot and nearly died.

One of the suspects remains at large.

Now, the case and the manhunt for David Friend hits the national spotlight again.

No one more than Amy Buell wants to see Friend in custody. She was there that day.

'The largest collection of machine guns that we've ever run into'

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - A gun dealer died alone at his Springfield home, surrounded by a collection of firearms worth an estimated half million dollars.

Police found Victor Bryan Fogle, 73, dead at his home on 5th and E streets in Springfield, Ore., on Wednesday.

Officers found 114 firearms, including 33 machine guns, and thousands of rounds of ammunition and reloading supplies inside the house.

"This is the largest collection of machine guns that we've ever run into," said Sgt. John Umenhoffer.

The Metro Bomb Disposal Unit removed gunpowder from the home, and police took the guns into custody for safe-keeping, according to Umenhoffer.

Sgt. Umenhoffer said that after the story aired several relatives of Fogle stepped forward. The collection of weapons have an estimated value of $500,000.

Plank Town for downtown Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - New business is fermenting in downtown Springfield, in more ways than one.
It's going to be a new brew pub and restaurant on Main Street, and the owner said it's no gamble.

City permits are pending for the new Plank Town Brewing Company.

For many years, the downtown Springfield bar scene was nothing to brag about. Now, a Eugene brew-pub owner is ready to try his luck across the freeway, and he said this will be different.

It's a long way from Springfield to East Grand Forks, Minnesota--but brew pub owner Bart Caridio is about to connect the dots.

"Famous bar there from the prohibition era...Whitey's Wonderbar," says Caridio.

That's a place near his old North Dakota college campus. Caridio plans to build his Whitey's at a former Springfield institution, Ruthie B's.

"This place just, yeah, captivated me," explained Caridio.

Caridio is co-owner of Sam Bond's Garage in Eugene and the Axe & Fiddle pub in Cottage Grove. He thinks the market is right in Springfield for Plank Town Brewery Company.

State Police: 'Serious Injury Crash' on McKenzie Hwy

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Oregon State Police reported a 'serious injury traffic accident' on Highway 126E Sunday afternoon.

The crash happened on McKenzie Highway (126E) near the intersection of Holden Creek Lane. OSP blocked the highway west of Leaburg for around two hours around 2:oo in the afternoon. The highway is clear to traffic at this time.

Police said a black Chevrolet Corvette, driven by 76-year-old Verne Dowty from Springfield, failed to stop while approaching the Highway intersection from Holden Creek Lane. The Corvette broad-sided a Nissan Quest minivan with four Redmond women inside.

A KVAL reporter at the scene said that Dowty's Corvette was taken from the side of the road and loaded onto a tow truck. KVAL also reported that the minivan was hauled out of the ditch next to the roadway.

Dowty was transported by an ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center with serious injuries.
