Springfield Downtown has youth and vitality

As I drove thru downtown Springfield at 11:45 today I noticed something different. Teenagers were walking to lunch, chatting and laughing. Our down town is alive and it's our youth that are bringing part of it.

There are a growing group of solid, enjoyable and interesting businesses and shops in the downtown hub. The library and city hall are neat, clean and safe. You can have several types of food or a sweet treat at the new CJ Sweeties with candy, ice cream and frozen yogurt.

During the holidays my daughter and I enjoyed Tea and Scones at Ruthie B's and shopped the antique stores.

The new high school focusing on the arts combined with the Wildish Theater is bringing more life to the area. I look forward to many years of enjoying our downtown and watching this group of teens make downtown Springfield part of their lives.

With Camp Fire, February is all about the chocolate

Camp Fire USA will be 100 years old this March, and local boys and girls have kicked off the year with the annual Candy Sale. Mints, Almond Carmel Clusters and Almond Roca are on Sale with our local youth groups.

There will be wine tasting, lucious chocolate deserts supplied by premier local bakeries and restaurants, celebrity chocolate carvers and a silent auction with a valentine theme. "The Hawaiian Elvis" will be entertaining.

With Camp Fire's recent move to it's new Springfield location it is now the first of the national youth organizations to have it's local council offices based in Springfield.

Have you seen Buster?

I received this email today from Veneta resident Lacy Miron:

"We lost our dog Buster in Blue River on Saturday the 23rd and have exhausted all other options (we filed a report with lane county animal shelter, springfield animal control, greenhill, our vet, contacted the microchip company to see if he has been scanned at any vet, posted several ads on craigslist both under the pets section and the lost and found section and have papered all of Blue River with lost posters offering a reward for his return). He is a 2 year old medium sized dog (approximately 30 lbs) with brown fur and a black nose. He is a Chihuahua Pit Bull mix with a little rhodesian ridgeback (he has the little black point at the end of his tail and the black diamond of fur about halfway down his tail). Please see attached picture. He is chipped and has several tags (his license, rabies vaccination, etc) on his black nylon collar. We miss our puppy and can't wait to have him home again! Any help would be greatly appreciated!"

If you have information about Buster's whereabouts, you can contact Lacy at 541-908-1617.

First Baptist offers sack lunches to students on Fridays when school is not in session

Angie Werder sent a message using the contact form at http://springfield.kval.com/contact.

The First Baptist Church of Springfield has organized a committee to assemble and distribute 50+ (this number is increasing with demand) sack lunches to the students of Springfield Middle School on the Thursdays before the "no school Fridays" for the '09/'10 school year.  With the recent government budget cuts, the Springfield Public School District has changed it's schedule to include at least two Fridays per month where school is not in session.

There are 340 students at SMS, and 90% of them are at or below the poverty line, which qualifies them for free or reduced lunches when school is in session.  Many of these kids go hungry on weekends because their families can't afford to feed them.  Some will hoard their free lunches starting on Wednesdays to help get them through the weekend.
